The Archdiocese of Los Angeles community is invited to watch FREE (LIBRES), a film about monastic life within 12 monasteries and convents in Spain, which provides a powerful opportunity for Catholics and non-Catholics alike to experience silence, prayer and setting oneself apart from a busy life, which could be a contradiction to our noise-infested world. The movie in Spanish with English subtitles, will be in theaters in Los Angeles and across the United States on Thursday, November 2, 2023. Directed by Spanish filmmaker Santos Blanco and written by Javier Lorenzo, through the movie experience the audience will be able to go behind the walls of the hidden and unknown life in a religious cloister and learn what leads a person in the 21st century to divest himself or herself from life “in the world” in exchange for a life devoted exclusively to go deeply into his or her interior spiritual life.
It is the first time that cameras of a film production team are granted access to monasteries, which usually remain closed to the world. With nearly 750, Spain is currently the country with most monasteries, convents and abbeys inhabited by nuns and monks.
The musical composition was led by Oscar M. Leanizbarrutia, awarded in 2022 as the best newcomer composer by the International Film Music Critic Association for the soundtrack for “Claret,” known as “Slaves and Kings” in the U.S. Photography was done by Carlos de la Rosa García.
FREE was part of this year’s HSBC Spanish Film Festival celebrating its 25th Anniversary in June-July 2023 in Spain and Australia, with movies showing the rich culture and heritage of Spanish and Latin American communities.

Se invita a la comunidad de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles a ver LIBRES (FREE), un documental sobre la vida monástica en 12 monasterios y conventos en España, que ofrece una poderosa oportunidad para que católicos y no católicos experimenten el silencio, la oración, y se aparten de una vida ocupada, lo que podría ser una contradicción con nuestro mundo infestado de ruido. Dirigida por el cineaste español Santos Blanco y escrita por Javier Lorenzo, a través de la experiencia cinematográfica el público podrá adentrarse detrás de los muros de la vida occulta y desconocida en un claustro religioso y conocer qué lleva a una persona del siglo XXI a despojarse de sí misma o de la vida “en el mundo” a cambio de una vida dedicada exclusivamente a profundizar en su vida espiritual interior.
Es la primera vez que las cámaras de un equipo de producción cinematográfica tienen acceso a monasterios, que por lo regular permanecen cerrados al mundo. Con cerca de 750, España es actualmente el país con más monasterios, conventos y abadías habitadas por monjas y monjes.
La composición musical del documental estuvo a cargo de Oscar M. Leanizbarrutia, premiado en 2022 como mejor compositor revelación por la Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Música de Cine por la banda sonora de “Claret”, conocida en Estados Unidos como “Esclavos y Reyes”. La fotografía estuvo a cargo de Carlos de la Rosa García.
LIBRES participó en el Festival de Cine Español HSBC de este año, que celebró su 25 aniversario en junio-julio de 2023 en España y Australia, con películas que muestran la riqueza cultural y herencia de las comunidades de España y de América Latina.
